Students Celebrated for Leadership Work

Four Warren students attended the Leavenworth Area Youth Leadership Conference, sponsored by Leavenworth Rotary Club, late last fall. Erika Janasz, Shelby Moore, Sean Hammell, and Julian Seeger, all 8th graders, spent two days with approximately 20 other students from the community learning about defining leadership, building pride and self-esteem, planning their finances, setting goals, building a resume, and improving their business etiquette. They also learned about future opportunities for leadership training, such as the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy held at the University of Kansas, for high school aged students. These students worked hard and contributed to the overall learning of their peers. Students received plaques for their participation in the conference, as well as book marks referencing General Colin Powell. Julian shared that his takeaway from the conference was, "It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning." (by Colin Powell). Erika said that she learned about many different kinds of leadership and that you have to be confident as a leader. Sean said, "You can't force people to follow you. You have to be nice and find ways to make them want to do what you want them to do." And, Shelby said, "It was a great experience and helped us learn how to be a leader." Congratulations, Warren leaders!
